Types of Patent Application in India

• Provisional Application – A provisional application, also known as a temporary application, is filed when an invention is still in the works and has not yet been finalized.
• Ordinary or Non-Provisional Application – Filed when a complete specification is available and no provisional application was filed.
• Direct Filing – A complete specification is initially filed with the Indian Patent Office without filing any provisional application.
• Subsequent Filing – Filed after the provisional application to claim priority from it.
• Convention Application – Filed to claim priority from a similar application filed in another convention country.
• PCT International Application – Does not result in a patent directly but helps secure priority in up to 142 nations.
• PCT National Application – Filed after entering the national phase from a PCT international application.
• Divisional Application – Filed when a single patent application contains more than one invention.
